How it works

Three steps. Zero effort.

You never change how you work. Shroud catches what you'd miss.

01
Install & forget

Shroud sits in your menu bar. No setup, no browser extension. Turn it on and never think about it again.

02
Take any screenshot

Use ⌘⇧4, ⌘⇧3, or the screenshot toolbar however you normally would. Shroud intercepts your clipboard automatically.

03
Paste with confidence

Your clipboard already holds the clean version. Paste into Slack, Notion, or email — secrets stay on your machine.

Testimonials

What people are saying

I leaked an OpenAI key in a screenshot to our Slack twice. Shroud made that impossible. I don't even think about it anymore.

Alex T. — Senior Backend Engineer

I share hundreds of screenshots a week with clients. Now I just paste — I never have to scan the image first.

Maya R. — Product Designer

On-device processing was non-negotiable. I looked at five tools. Shroud was the only one I actually trusted.

FAQ

Questions

How does Shroud intercept screenshots?
When you take a screenshot, macOS places it on your clipboard. Shroud monitors clipboard changes, detects images, runs OCR and pattern matching locally, blurs any sensitive regions, and writes the clean version back — all before you paste.
Does it work with all screenshot methods?
Yes — ⌘⇧3 (full screen), ⌘⇧4 (region select), ⌘⇧4 then Space (window capture), and the Screenshot toolbar (⌘⇧5). Any method that places an image on the clipboard is intercepted automatically.
Is anything ever sent to a server?
Never. Shroud runs entirely on your Mac using Apple's Vision framework and Core Image. There is no backend, no cloud processing, no telemetry. Your screenshots never leave your machine.
How fast is the redaction?
Typically 1–2 seconds on Apple Silicon, a little longer on Intel. The full pipeline — OCR, pattern detection, blurring, clipboard write — runs in the background so your Mac stays fully responsive.
What if Shroud finds nothing sensitive?
The screenshot passes through completely untouched. No notification, no delay, no friction. Shroud is invisible unless it actually needs to protect you.
Does it work on Apple Silicon and Intel?
Yes. Shroud is a universal binary that runs natively on both Apple Silicon (M1 through M4) and Intel Macs. Apple Silicon benefits from faster Neural Engine performance for on-device OCR.
